Marite Norris illustrates her experiences of squatting in a crazy London Council Block, Yorkway Court. The dilapidated flats, in Kings Cross have since been demolished. These images display marginalized subcultures of people who see the world differently. It is a study of (mainly) women, doing what they do in the world. It was inspired by the underground fetish scene of London in the 1990’s; animated and erotic, with a touch of humour.

Chasing Apsaras

Apsaras, the divine celestial nymphs and courtesans of Hindu mythology are found from India to the ancient Champa Kingdom of Southern Vietnam. Chasing Apsaras is an Indochinese journey that contrasts the 21st century with age-old ritual. From the frenetic desperation of the Soi Cowboy to the tranquility of ancient Angkor temple ruins, photographers Mark England and Julian Tennant blend digital capture with vintage Cyanotype, Kallitype and traditional B&W printing techniques. The resulting images are a fitting parallel to this world in a state of flux, where tradition is forced to adapt and change of be subsumed by it.

My first solo exhibition: Sons of Beaches - will run from March 30 to April 13, 2008 at the Kurb Gallery, 310 William Street, Perth. Sons of Beaches is part of FotoFreo, the Fremantle Festival of Photography.

"West Australian photographer, Seng Mah, re-imagines the icon of the Australian
surf-lifesaver beyond its traditional associations with masculinity and
mateship. This exhibition asks whether the values and attitudes often attached
to this prevailing icon are still relevant today, or if the traditions of surf
life saving have evolved with the way we culturally identify ourselves as
Australians. The pictures reveal stories of individual surf lifesavers: stories
that can be poignant, dramatic, quirky and even erotic. The images re-purpose
the icon for consumption by a 21st century multi-cultural, multi-faceted
audience, and engage currently evolving attitudes about men, masculinity and
about being Australian. Sons of Beaches is a FotoFreo Perth 2008

Phosphorus 15 is a celebration of 15 years of the Photography Gallery of WA and we warmly invite you to join us for the opening on Saturday October 20, at 5:00pm.

Chimera is the latest exhibition by photographer Louise Mann.

This exhibition foregrounds a progression from Louise's earlier, more figurative pieces, to a more evocative exploration of light and mood. These works are moodier and more abstract than her previous images, displaying a depth and interest that engages the viewer in a contemplative and enquiring way.

Louise says: “My latest work is essentially sensory. I have attempted to pare back my images to pure colour, light and tone, void of representational forms. I want to convey only the essence of a particular scene without the distraction of the literal, allowing the viewer to complete the narrative using their own context.”

FICTION the latest group exhibition at PCP, has brought together three people from different creative backgrounds: all sharing a similar eye for the obscure. The intricate images look like etchings capturing the texture and detail in every day objects from Perth, Melbourne, Finland and Japan.

Each photograph holds its own fictional quality that encourages the viewer to discern its content by imagination or perseverance. These photographs disregard scale to transform the sometimes obvious into obscure.

FotoFreo Fringe Festival 2008 - Call for submissions

The FotoFreo Fringe Festival is a series of simultaneous exhibitions by local Western Australian and national photographers held throughout Fremantle and Perth along side and at the same time as the core (curated) FotoFreo 2008 festival exhibitions. The exhibitions will run from April 5 to May 4, 2008.

If you are a photographer or represent a venue that would like to participate in the FotoFreo 2008 Fringe Exhibition Programme, you are invited to submit an exhibition proposal or make a venue application. Forms are available at the Fringe Festival website: www.fotofreo.com/fringe

Exhibition proposals must be completed in full and submitted electronically or on a disk, and will only be accepted if and when a venue can be arranged and the venue owner/operator is prepared to sign the Venue Participation Agreement (see website for more details). A non refundable fee of $50 for photographers must accompany the submission. Cheques should be made out to FotoFreo 2008 Fringe and posted to FotoFreo Inc, PO Box 1292, Fremantle WA 6959. However, if you already have a venue and the venue is prepared to sign the Venue Participation Agreement, then this fee will be waived.

Underneath all that splendour - "Suburban Splendour" by Graham Miller

Viewing the staged portraits in Graham Miller's "Suburban Splendour" exhibition reminded me, perhaps not coincidentally, of American Splendour, both the comic by Pekar and Crumb, and the film of the same name: they are narratives of everyday life filled with the stuff that makes living sometimes so unbearable: the moments of pain, loneliness, alienation, frustration, emptiness and unhappiness experienced by all. Yet these moments must be endured, and it is this universal endurance, the experiences that we have all shared with the subjects of Miller's portraits, that make his photographs so compelling.

Suburban Splendour" is a collection of portraits (and photographs of suburban settings) that are powerful in their own right but when viewed together, display an unabating sense of tension and intensity and, disturbingly so, underlying hopelessness. The portraits may not be to everyone's tastes and many of them can be seen to be quite bleak (where does Miller find his participants?) - but the incidents and emotions they chronicle are rivetting.

The focus of Miller's photography here is reminiscent of some of Tracey Moffatt's work - certainly her "Scarred for Life" series in some respects, where one gains the disquieting awareness that something quite awful or terrible has occurred or will occur in the scene depicted, and waits with bated breath for it to unfold. The fact that it doesn't makes it all the more unbearable. The photograph entitled "Annie" could almost be deemed homage to Moffat's Something More series. Coincidentally, "Annie" is wearing a red dress too, and finds herself seeking to escape a landscape of hopelessness, disrepair and despair. Whereas Moffat's heroine finds release in a shocking, yet inevitable demise, there is nothing but determination and hope on Annie's face as she looks into the distance, just as Moffatt's heroine had done.

"Suburban Splendour" comes highly recommended; it's rare when a local photographer is able to create images that so starkly resonate with the zeitgeist of our own urban and suburban realities. The photographs are splendid; the splendour within them, ironic and ultimately sad. Yet amongst them, we see glimmerings of hope of escape and renewal: in the gazes of Miller's subjects as they look through partially drawn curtains into the sunlight or, in Annie's case, into the light of the rising sun.

"Suburban Splendour" opens at the Turner Gallery on July 6th and runs until August 4.

In a wheatbelt town of only 200 people, a local photographer caused a big stir by posting an add in the local newspaper - ‘nude models wanted!’ The town of Darkan is feeling very nervous. Join us to see why!

PCP invites you to join us and the residents of Darkan for the opening of ‘Womans Work’, a solo exhibition by photographer Caroline Telfer, who has created a candid series based on the domestic life of women in a tiny country town.

I wish I was the sort of woman who could enjoy domestic chores! I have
great respect for the people, be they men or women, who stay at home and care
for their family.

These images feature women doing everyday things, household chores, and
wifely, motherly type activities. The women are faceless and nameless; they may
not be valued for who they are but for what they do.

A woman is usually judged by her appearance. These are not women being
sexy in a glossy magazine. These are women who care about their husbands and
their families. They have bared themselves for art and I thank them for
that.

[Exhibition] Wastelands by Juha Tolonen, Perth Centre for Photography

Wastelands is a journey into abandoned and transitory spaces in Australia and Europe. Tolonen has explored spaces such as family fun parks in abandoned nuclear power stations creating large format images recording some of the unusual ways that buildings decline, and ways that space is reordered. Tolonen writes:

"Large format photography has had a long association with architecture and landscape. It expands detail, corrects perspective and allows almost infinite depth of field, satisfying our desires for topographical accuracy.

"I have always enjoyed the images of the New Topographers, like Lewis Baltz and Robert Adams, who in the 1970s photographed the impact of suburbia encroaching on the frontier of the American West. Their images harboured a strange tension between banality and beauty.

"The New Topographers depicted the (dysfunctional) marriage between a young civilisation and an ancient landscape. What I feel I am doing is looking at landscape after the divorce. Some spaces fall to ruin, in others new unexpected relationships are formed.

"Commonly, defunct industrial landscapes are transformed into modern centres of consumption. But family fun parks in abandoned nuclear power stations and the prospect of a European wilderness in Chernobyl reveal that landscape is never a finished project, nor what we always expect.

"I do not want to cast these images simply as documents of particular spaces or countries; I also feel that there is an element of fantasy in them, sometimes dark, at other times playful. Large format photography tends to record more than we can actually see, compelling us to look longer. The matter of fact appearance is also its mystery."

[Exhibition] Pictures Of A Changing Climate, WA Museum, 30 March to 29 April

Pictures of a Changing Climate connects our actions with the livelihoods of others in distant places through four photographic displays. Each display demonstrates climate change from a global to a local perspective with award-winning professional and amateur images.

Included in the exhibition is NorthSouthEastWest, an international photographic display from Magnum Photos, coordinated by The Climate Group and The British Council. This section contains 22 images with text and comments by world leaders, thinkers and identities such as Kofi Annan, Arthur C Clarke, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tony Blair and David Suzuki.

Complementing this exhibition is Natural Australian Icons which highlights the effect that climate change is having on Australia. The images shown depict five areas across Australia including the Great Barrier Reef and the Murray Darling River.

Western Australians have been invited to submit their own images showing the effect of climate change from a local perspective. From the entries received, ten winning images will go on display in the Western Australian Climate Change Photographic section.

Pictures of a Changing Climate will also show the changes Western Australians are making to tackle climate change. In particular this exhibition will highlight the State’s achievements and initiatives towards a better tomorrow.

I think it's testament to the absolute Lord of the Rings fan that I am (yikes) that I first read this competition to be: "The Rosie Cotton Award..." - Rosie Cotton being the hobbit lass whom Samwise Gamgee wooed and married upon his return from the adventures in Mordor.

The Olive Cotton Award is an annual award for excellence in photographic portraiture offering a $10,000 major prize, funded by Cotton’s family in memory of “one of Australia's leading twentieth century photographers” (Art Gallery NSW, 2000). In 2005 the Friends of the Tweed River Art Gallery have sponsored additional Directors Choice awards to the value of $2,000. All awards are acquisitive with the winning works becoming part of the Tweed River Art Gallery’s “Australian Portrait Collection”.

The exhibition is selected from entrants across Australia and is a significant opportunity for both emerging and established photographers. Photographer Sally McInerney, daughter of Olive Cotton, is the inaugural judge.Entries will close at 5pm on Friday 5th August 2005.

Uncanny is the inaugural solo exhibition of daguerreotypes, tintypes, Polaroid's and injet prints by WA photographer Daniel Nevin. The works in this exhibition are the result of Nevin's reading of an essay written by Freud on the subject of the uncanny (the term he used was "Das Unheimlich" or "unhomely").

"Freud believed that uncanny feelings come when we as adults are confronted
with the possibility that a discarded childhood belief may have been correct.
For example, a belief in a doll that is alive, or a denial of death, may have
been a comforting concept as a child. But if we encounter such things in reality
they are very disturbing,"

"Photographs, especially portraits, have many of these characteristics.
They duplicate us, they exist after our deaths, they have positive and negative
forms."

I guess you could say that I'm trying to capture the essence of the moment because it's often the light or mood or the setting that inspires the portrait."

"Undeclared Customs is an exhibition that I have organised in conjunction with the Pikture Gallery in Bangkok. It is the first of an ongoing exchange between photographers from Thailand and Western Australia.

"The first part of the exchange is an exhibition of Thai photographers work at the Breadbox Gallery in Northbridge, which will run during February. The 5 Thais featured include some of their most prominent contemporary photographers.

"This exhibition will be followed by an exhibition of Australian photographers at the Pikture Gallery in Bangkok during March."

Sometimes the real journey begins after the trip is over…

WA contemporary photographic artist Belle Verdiglione is exhibiting a stunning new series of work "Tres años más tarde…” meaning "three years later".

Belle’s compelling work explores the three years of her life since returning from travels through South America and Europe.

With a new perspective Belle has delved into public and private spaces to create photographs that reveal the unpredictable journey that began after she returned from her travels.

The exhibition opening night is Friday the 12th of January at 6:30pm and the exhibition runs until the 31st of January.

Venue: Taylor’s Café and Art House, 510 Great Northern Highway, Middle Swan.

Gallery opening hours are Wed-Sunday 10am -5pm

A joint project between photographer, Lucien Sims and experimental film maker, Kate Faulds, It's Dark Outside is a visual exploration of local spaces from the point of view of the tourist outsider.

Kate’s digital film is an exploration of public/private spaces in India and Nepal. Lucien’s photography is an exploration of space in some of the world’s busiest cities.They are 'tourist’ studies; in the sense that neither artist lives permanently in the places they are documenting. Therefore making the visual studies an outsider’s perspective of particular landscapes and cultural nuances.

The choice of subject matter, however, is far from your average ‘tourist’ recordings.The work is ‘dark’ in nature; aesthetically, atmospherically and thematically. Paradoxically, It’s Dark Outside will contain many contrasts. Images of a country in an emerging democracy versus one of the most culturally and technically developed places in the world. An exploration of 'darkened spaces'.

Subtitled: "How I learned to stop worrying and love film photography", Stereogram is the brainchild of Piers Morgan and Alaina Gourgoulis. The exhibition showcases a series of diptychs, each with an image by Morgan and Gourgoulis.

Says Morgan: "It's all film work; we both shoot digitally as well, but film has that certain je ne sais quoi, and that's partly what we've attempted to embody in our images".

The Opening Party is on at 8pm, Friday 22nd December, at the Free Range Gallery, 359 Hay Street, SUBIACO.
