Carnavon 6701 - Photographs by Christian Byrt

Christian Byrt is a photographer based in the subtropical NW of this State, in the fair burg known as Carnarvon. I came across Byrt's website and photographs via the blog of the ever-ebullient Art Director. I'd encourage Light Box WA visitors to have a look at Byrt's site and his gallery: Carnarvon 6701

[Exhibition] Raised by Wolves, the Art Gallery of WA

Exhibition times: Runs until 17th June, 2007.

Raised by Wolves is the Art Gallery of Western Australia's vivid response to this year's Festival theme of The Human Family. Exploring non-traditional family groups in today's world, this innovative exhibition brings together historical, contemporary and Indigenous works on paper, sculpture, paintings, video and installation.

The 25 international and Australian artists suggest alternative relationship structures and chart the enticing possibilities and frightening realities of living outside mainstream society.

A visually stunning interactive exhibition, Raised by Wolves offers a rare opportunity for families, teenagers and young adults to examine the human family and explore the roles and expectations each face in today's world.

Raised by Wolves features the photographic works of Tracy Moffat, Jim Goldberg, Robert Rainey, Hein Kuhn-Oh, Ruth Maddison and Takashi Homma.

[Exhibition] Uncanny - Photographs by Daniel Nevin

At the Perth Centre for Photography, 91 Brisbane Street, Perth
Opening: Thursday 29 March, 6pm
Exhibition dates: until April the 14th. Gallery opens 12-5pm, Thurs to Sunday.

Uncanny is the inaugural solo exhibition of daguerreotypes, tintypes, Polaroid's and injet prints by WA photographer Daniel Nevin. The works in this exhibition are the result of Nevin's reading of an essay written by Freud on the subject of the uncanny (the term he used was "Das Unheimlich" or "unhomely").

"Freud believed that uncanny feelings come when we as adults are confronted
with the possibility that a discarded childhood belief may have been correct.
For example, a belief in a doll that is alive, or a denial of death, may have
been a comforting concept as a child. But if we encounter such things in reality
they are very disturbing,"

"Photographs, especially portraits, have many of these characteristics.
They duplicate us, they exist after our deaths, they have positive and negative
forms."
