[Exhibition] It's Dark Outside - the Blackbox ARTRAGE Complex, Dec 8 - Dec 14

A joint project between photographer, Lucien Sims and experimental film maker, Kate Faulds, It's Dark Outside is a visual exploration of local spaces from the point of view of the tourist outsider.

Kate’s digital film is an exploration of public/private spaces in India and Nepal. Lucien’s photography is an exploration of space in some of the world’s busiest cities. They are 'tourist’ studies; in the sense that neither artist lives permanently in the places they are documenting. Therefore making the visual studies an outsider’s perspective of particular landscapes and cultural nuances.

The choice of subject matter, however, is far from your average ‘tourist’ recordings. The work is ‘dark’ in nature; aesthetically, atmospherically and thematically. Paradoxically, It’s Dark Outside will contain many contrasts. Images of a country in an emerging democracy versus one of the most culturally and technically developed places in the world. An exploration of 'darkened spaces'.

[Exhibition] From Pixel to Print - An Interactive Photography Exhibition; Perth Centre for Photography; Nov 29-Dec 13

www.frompixeltoprint.com

From Pixel to Print is what happens when a group of Perth photographers bring their works, previously exhibited in an online photo-sharing community, into a physical gallery space, infusing this space with the dynamic and interactive nature of the online environment!

Traditionally, gallery spaces do not encourage active engagement with exhibitions. Images and artwork tend to be regarded as artefacts, to be observed, scrutinised and understood, often on a personal, non-vocalised level. At most, visitors may leave a comment or two in a guest book en route out of the gallery.

As an exhibition, “From Pixel to Print” challenges viewers to engage with the images in ways that makes the experience of viewing an exhibition one of active interaction, instead of passive reception. Each image presents its own ‘comment space’ – where viewers may leave comments (anonymous or otherwise). Viewers may also nominate images as favourites, and contribute to the way an image asks to be read by tagging it with alternative titles, or descriptions. A viewing of a photograph in the exhibition, thus, is not just a passive experience – a viewer may access comments and tags left by others and add their own.

Photographers: Seng Mah, Nathan Cantwell, Shem Bisluk, Brendan Head, Craig Abbott and Guy McLachlan

Opening Night: 7pm, 29th November, at the Perth Centre for Photography (91, Brisbane Street, Perth)

From Pixel to Print runs from Wednesday Nov 29 to Wednesday Dec 13 at the Perth Centre for Photography. The gallery is open from Weds to Sun, 12pm to 5pm.

[Exhibition] Diana Picture - Kevin Ballantine @ the Perth Centre for Photography; Nov 16 - Dec 26

Nothing to do with the late, lamented Princess (though what a title!), this exhibition should be of interest to those in love with instinctive, accidental or off-the-cuff photography.

Diana Pictures
by Kevin Ballantine
On show at the Perth Centre for Photography
91 Brisbane St, Perth
Thurs Nov 16 to Sun Dec 16.

Ballantine writes:

"Last time I was in in Paris, I left the Musee Rodin and walked down boulevard des Invalides when a woman came hurrying towards me from the direction of the Metro. She was so Paris. I didn’t have time to do anything other than wind on the film and shoot the Nikon from the hip but I made a picture."

"The negative was overexposed and out of focus and her feet were cut off, but I liked the print very much. A rushing Camille Claudel scurrying by."

"As the best photos often aren’t intended, this time I had brought to Paris a borrowed, Kodak Diana. A toy like camera, with a plastic lens, that leaks light, unevenly exposes film, overlaps frames and produces softly focussed, hazy, whimsical and unintended images."

"And so when light and things and locations don’t conspire to create a picture, the Diana perhaps could come up with something..."

Note that the PCP gallery is open Weds - Sun, 12pm to 5pm.

[Exhibition] A Brush with a Camera, University Club, UWA, Hackett Drive, Crawley - Sept 1 to 29

Local artist/photographer, Gareth Gorman opens his first solo exhibition of paintings and photos at the UWA University Club, Hackett Drive, Crawley at 6pm, September 1.

Gorman, who is currently studying Fine Art and History at UWA has participated in group exhibitions before, but this will be his first as a Solo Artist. Gorman explain his reasons for going solo: "I've exhibited paintings in many exhibitions before but I've been limited to one or two pieces and, sometimes, I feel restricted by the themes of the competitions. I like to paint what I like, not what should be painted to win a competition. I can also include my favourite works so others can, hopefully, enjoy them as much as I."

Many artists find the prospect of a solo exhibition both a daunting and exciting experience -- Gorman is no different: "I was worried I wouldn't have enough to offer. Now I think I have too much."

Gorman's exhibition explores themes close to his heart: colour, coast, water and sky. Living close to the ocean and river, he draws inspiration from the environment and the creatures (human and otherwise) that inhabit it. "We live so near the coast and river I'm spoiled for choice. I also travel a fair bit soI now take my trusty Canon with me everywhere. I tend to include people in my paintings, there must be a human or fauna element to give some movement and scale to the scene. Still lifes were never my thing," Gorman adds.

Gorman's other love is portraiture - this exhibition will feature some of his special fine art portrait paintings and photographs. Says Gorman: "The human body is a wonderful thing and if I can capture a reasonable likeness, then it gives me a great sense of satisfaction and achievement."

"Initially I took poor photos as references for my painting ( I could always alter and improve things on the canvas ). The purchase of a digital SLR improved the quality of my photographs so that my interest has now swung toward photography. I have also found that I'm looking for the abstract in subjects now, whereas before I'd simply look for a good subject to paint. Colour and form have always been important to me and I try to incorporate both elements into my work. As I live near the river and ocean on the western side of the continent I have a constant source of subject matter."

Gorman's love of the beach and coastal scenes will be evident in the paintings on exhibition. His photographs will cover a gamut of subjects: flowers, people, vistas, birds, cloudscapes, sunsets or sunrises. Why art and photography? "There's so much this world has to offer," says Gorman, "and I'm thankfull my art training has allowed me to actually SEE it. Which is something I tried to instill in my pupils... see what you are looking at. Of course, unless you know what to look for you're going to see nothing and miss this wonderful world.

"Photography has come a long way since the camera was first used and I am of the opinion that fine art includes photographic work. As I used photographs ( poorly taken for the best part ) as references for my paintings I thought it appropriate to have a mixed exhibition. My photography seems to have improved since November, when I was given a digital SLR. I've also included some abstact, digitally enhanced images to balance the content."

All of Gorman's work in the exhibition will be for sale, apart from a few portraits on loan.

  • When: Sept 1 - Sept 29, 2006

[News] Book launch: Bohdan Warchomij's Portrait of a Revolution

The launch date of Bohdan Warchomij’s long awaited panoramic book witnessing the Ukrainian Orange Revolution is now penciled in. The book will be launched at Greens, Oxford Street, Leederville, on Sunday October 1, 2006 at 6.30 pm.

The book is a collectible photographic hardbound book on uncoated stock with a laminated cover and a foreword by David Dare Parker, a highly respected Australian Photojournalist. It includes an incisive essay by Professor Marko Pavlyshyn from Monash University in Melbourne on the political background to the Orange Revolution, a peaceful people’s revolution which changed the democratic process in Ukraine so dramatically.

Featuring 132 pp of definitive black and white and colour images which document the scenario in Kyiv in November and December of 2004 the book captures the feel of the Revolution and hints of a darker, less optimistic future.

The images from the book have been exhibited widely, at Monash University in November 2005 and in Fremantle Prison in March and April 2006 as part of Foto Freo, an International Photography Festival.

Gail Williams, in STM on the 19 March 2006, wrote “When Bohdan Warchomij packed his camera and returned to his homeland of Ukraine, he walked into the story of a lifetime”.
Join us for the launch party at Greens and secure your copy of this limited release book.

[News] Simple country boy takes "Highly Commended" prize at City of Belmont Art Awards

Nathan Cantwell, a self-professed "simple country boy" from Albany, WA, took out the "Highly Commended" award in this year's City of Belmont Art awards for his photograph entitled: "Fleeting".

This was an inaugural win for Cantwell, 31, who has been a keen photographer for a few years. Usually a photographer of landscapes, Cantwell decided to branch out into a more 'impressionistic' style of photography when he was given an old 300mm lens by a good friend.

"It's a completely manual lens - no autofocus, no metering, no apperture or shutter speed priority," said Cantwell, which is certainly testament to the fact that it's not the equipment that makes for an outstanding photo -- it's the photographer

Cantwell's compositions of local bird life, caught in mid-motion, have a painterly quality about them; award judges agree, remarking that his entry - "Fleeting" - an image of a butcher bird just taking flight from a branch - is reminiscent of a Japanese print.

Cantwell's prize-winning photograph, as well as other entries in the City of Belmont Art Awards, can be viewed at the Belmont Forum Shopping Centre from Monday August 21 to Saturday September 2nd.

[Exhibition] Sam James - I'll believe in anything - Perth Centre for Photography, 91 Brisbane St. Perth, 16 Aug - 3 Sept

Sam James inaugural exhibition "I'll Believe in Anything" takes us into the intimate worlds of his existence. Showcasing a collection of portraits (self and others), snapshots, events and incidents, "I'll Believe in Anything" is, according to Sam:

"... about we and us. The feeling of we and us. I love that feeling.
I don’t mean we and us exclusively, as a couple, like boyfriend and girlfriend or
anything like that . I mean we and us as in, you know, The Gang... us... the
whole gang… all of us.
It's about the feeling of being one of us.
"I’ll believe in anything" refers to my susceptibility to be sucked in by these
feelings and ideas. It refers to a willingness to take the bait, to get wrapped
up in the moment. To blindly have faith in and trust the people around you, the
world around you. I think life’s just more fun that way..."

[Exhibition] Erwin Olaf: Elegance and perversity - John Curtin Gallery, 21 July - 15 September

'Elegance and Perversity' brings together a selection of works from Dutch photographer, Erwin Olaf. In this exhibition, Olaf entertains and confronts through a series of staged photographs where "the body becomes a site of transgression that throws into question the current codes of morality, freedom and beauty." (Paco Barragan, exhibition curator). Hence, viewers are treated to glamourised portraits of a bleeding Poppaea Sabina, whose husband, the Emperor Nero, kicked her to death while she was pregnant. Similarly, we see Lady Diana Spencer, who died when her Mercedes crashed whilst avoiding paparazzi in Paris, posing with a Mercedes hood ornament embedded in her bleeding arm.

[Musings] Re-envisioning landscapes

I've only very recently (in the last three months or thereabouts) begun taking landscape photographs. I've always been more inclined to be a people and events photographer - one who interacts, reacts and snaps in the hopes of recording, with some artistic and journalistic merit, the moment characterised by the person (or persons) and their engagement with the world. Then, influenced by a few photographer friends, I decided to take up landscape photography.

I started taking photographs that look like these:

Rush of hours Awash

Long-exposure shots of the coastal landscape at sunset, with the aperture stopped down to f16 or more, and the camera secured to a tripod, ND grad filters used to allow both correct exposure of the foreground and sky. You set up the tripod, frame the scene, expose, then wait for that "magic moment" - with a 2 second delay to account for the timer (with mirror lockup) - before hitting the shutter button.

Wallah.

I loved it. There was a sense of achievement in catching that right moment - that combination of light, setting and movement. And in achieving landsapes that seem so unearthly and which glowed.

So I did it again.

And again.

And again.

And it started feeling rather mechanical for me. Like writing a novel according to a formula. Like writing a Mills and Boon romance novel.

Just as quickly as I gained it, I lost the love for landscape photography.

I told myself that I should take a break from it. To begin re-thinking the way I photograph landscape.

Now, I make landscapes like these:

Mellow Breaking wind

[News] Head heads up City of Stirling Photography Competition winners

Local hobbyist photographer, Brendan Head, has won a section prize in this year's City of Stirling 'Moments of Stirling Spirit' Photography Competition.

Head, 24, an upcoming photographer with a penchant for candid street photography, submitted photographs taken at this year's Vodafone volleyball championship at Scarborough Beach to the competition. His tools of trade are a Canon 350D digital SLR and a Canon 28-135mm IS USM lens.

The winning entry in the 'Characters of Stirling' section, pointedly entitled "The Joys of Volleyball" cleverly comments on the more voyeuristic aspects of women's beach volleyball spectating.

Head's winning photograph, along with other section and category winners from this year's competition, will be on display at Westfield Innaloo shopping centre from the 8th – 14th June 2006.

[Competition] City of Stirling Photographic Competition - 'Moments of Stirling Spirit'

The City of Stirling, Perth, organises a photographic competition every two years, attracting over 100 entries and providing an excellent opportunity for photographers to capture the City of Stirling at work and play. Details of the competition and links to entry forms and conditions of entry can be found at the City of Stirling web site.

Entry closes 31 May (not long to go, folks!) and an exhibition of key entries will be held at Westfield Innaloo Shopping Centre, 8th June to 14th June.

Given my previous rent [see previous entry] about insidious and sinister motivations of photographic competition organisers, it's heartening to see that the City of Stirling acknowledges the rights of the photographer to his or her images: "Photographers will retain ownership of the copyright existing for their photographs entered, and the photographer will be given naming credit whenever their photograph is used for promotional purposes."

Good on ya, City of Stirling!

[Rant] Always read the fine print

A recent photography competition organised by Tourism Australia and The Australian newspaper - 'Wish You Were Here: Tourism Australia Photographi Competition' -asks for entries on the theme of "People on holidays" with categories for Nature, Outback, Cities and Beaches. You could win a camera, photographic gear or even holidays. Sounds good! Until you read the fine print in the Conditions of Entry, which states thus:

"Each entrant assigns to the Promoter all copyright and other intellectual property rights in each photo and description sent in as part of an entry in this competition. Each entrant acknowledges that the Promoter, as owner of the copyright in the photographs and descriptions, may reproduce the photographs and descriptions in any media or marketing for any purpose without permission or payment. The entrants agree to waive all their rights, including moral rights, in the photographs entered by the entrants in this competition."

So, for a few thousand dollars in equipment and holidays, the promoters become owners of free stock photographs taken by others - photographs which could essentially make them hundreds of thousands given the demand for quality stock images of Australian scenes for travel brochures, expos etc. Given the enthusiasm in which such competitions are often received, they stand to make a tidy killing from this simple competition.

Lesson here: Read the Conditions of Entry. Find out what you are surrendering before you send in your photograph/s. You could well be signing away your intellectual owenrship of the photograph/s - surrendering your moral right as the photographer and owner of your photographs, no longer being able to use them without seeking permission (and paying) for their use.

Be aware.

[Exhibition] Nemesis: The Source of One's Destruction - Perth Centre for Photography, May 3

Curated by Yvonne Doherty, Nemesis: The Source of One's Destruction opens at the Perth Centre for Photography on May 3. In this exhibition, photographers are asked to explore the following:
  • the source of harm or ruin
  • an opponent that cannot be beaten or overcome
  • one that inflicts retribution or vengeance
  • the source of damaging and dangerous behaviour
"Delve into your own or your subject's psyche, and find the nemesis lurking beneath the surface creating powerful emotional responses. The challenge lies in capturing your nemesis in visual form in a compelling way. The meaning of the word nemesis evokes darker themes but humour and kitsch can also be used to explore ideas."

Venue: Passenger Terminal Victoria Quay Fremantle

The Swedish tallship, Gotheborg, will arrive in Fremantle on 13 May and depart on 25 May. The arrival, which will be at 10am, will be a major event, so it might be one to put in your diary. Might be of interest to photographers with a nautical bent.

April is a great time of year for boating. The strong summer breezes have gone, the winter rains are some months away and the days can be warm and balmy. And the selling season is far from over with buyers looking to replace or upgrade gear and in some cases planning that new boat for next summer. Taking advantage of its position near the end of the season, the event will also provide a terrific opportunity for merchants to ‘ship out’ discontinued and over-stocked lines.
The Fremantle Boating Festival truly represents all aspects of boating and water activities including luxury cruising, sailing, fishing and scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, water skiing, wake boarding, windsurfing and kayaking. The Festival will present entertainment, tourism and boating destinations, career information and classes covering everything from fishing tips to marine navigation. The Festival will also feature next summer’s boat and beachwear, cooking demonstrations and much, much more.

It makes perfect sense to hold a premier boating festival in Western Australia’s internally recognised harbour city. The festival will also benefit from its location on the Esplanade Reserve Park in the heart of Fremantle. Close to the Cappuccino Strip and a short stroll from Fishing Boat Harbour, the park area will be laid out to provide a relaxed atmosphere where enthusiasts and the general public can stroll the show and see all things nautical.

Fishing Boat Harbour, the home of the 1987 Americas Cup defence, will be a focal point for the festival featuring up to 50 large vessels presented as they should be – on the water in a working harbour setting. Double the size of the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre, and with the ability to accommodate boats of any size, the Fremantle Boating Festival is big in every way and will rapidly become people’s favourite boating event.

[Event] Book launch - Portrait of a Revolution

Bohdan Warchomij
[Update 18/4/06] - The book launch for Portrait of a Revolution has been rescheduled for July to allow additional publication time. Parties interested in attending the launch should still email Bohdan at bohdan@warchomij.com .

In creating Portrait of a Revolution, Perth photojournalist Bohdan Warchomij returned to his parents’ homeland, Ukraine, to document the memorable events of November 2004: the Orange Revolution.

Then, in the city of Kyiv, thousands of Ukrainians voiced their protest against a rigged Presidential election. The passion, fervour and extraordinary dedication of protestors -- people from all walks of life, from all over Ukraine -- led to Democratic candidate Viktor Yuschenko’s victory over incumbent Prime Minister Yanukovych. In Ukraine, Warchomij recorded these events for the British and Canadian press, creating images that became visualisations of the collective voices of Ukrainians and their bid for a fair and free political system.

Portrait of a Revolution also chronicles the lives of Ukraininans and Tartars, and features a series of startling, yet poignant and beautifully photographed, images of children affected by the legacy of Chernobyl.

Currently on exhibition in FotoFreo, the Fremantle Photography Festival, Warchomij’s photographs will be published in Portrait of a Revolution – the book in May 2006. To secure your invitation to the book launch, contact Bohdan Warchomij directly at bohdan@warchomij.com

More information about Portrait of a Revolution, and Wachomij’s body of work can be discovered at http://www.warchomij.com/

[Event] Indonesian Transitions: photojournalism by David Dare Parker, Murdoch University Library (first floor), Mar 17 - May 19, 2006

I dropped in to this exhibition at Murdoch University today (first floor of the Murdoch Library) - and what a powerful collection of recent images of Indonesia. Taken at key turning points in recent Indonesian social and political history (the Tsunami, Aceh, the fall of Suharto, the transition from Megawati Sukarno Puteri to Suseno Bambamg Yudhoyono ) the withdrawal from East Timor), the black and white photographs by freelance photojournalist, David Dare Parker, are brutal, searing, touching and relevant.

If you live in the area, or find yourself south of the river, it's a worthwhile visit. Needless to say, the Aceh and East Timor photographs have the most immediate impact, but two 'sets' that formed a great impression on me were a series of four photographs juxtaposing prostitutes with the women at a high-society fashion show in Jakarta; and a series of photographs of the inhabitants who live in a slum by the railway.

The exhibition is in association with Fotofreo 2005, and runs from 17 March to 19 May 2006.

Some photographs from this exhibition, and more, can also be viewed at David Dare Parker's website: www.daviddareparker.com

[News] NPPA The Best of Photojournalism Winners

The (US) National Press Photographers Association 'Best of Photojournalism' winners have been announced. You can view the winner, category winners and honorary mentions here.

For me, photojournalists are the creme de la creme of photographers - they're not there to create aesthetically pleasing, technically perfect, though often vacuous, compositions. The images they take are searing, powerful reminders of the "world out there" and the need for us to remember that world and to respond in a politically responsible way. It's a pity that many of their images do not make it to our daily press. How much more powerful would our response to the Kashmir earthquake have been if The West Australian had published this image and this image and also this image?

The photographs in the Local Portrait and Personality category are amazing. And the stories they illustrate are shocking and confronting.

Have bear hat, will travel

Mood swings, with bear-eared hat

I recently acquired a head accoutrement in the shape of bear's ears, and have been having a bit too much fun with them on Flickr.

It was designed and crafted by Creative Caps, by Cate of Fremantle (actually, my friend Kate).

It's generated enough interest on Flickr that one of the Perth Flickrites, Scroop, had commissioned one for himself.

Who knows, this could be the beginning of a whole new business for Kate! :-)

Perth Flickr Meet

Well, it was good fun. In attendance:

  • Noodlez - Michael
  • Mikule - Michael
  • Scroop - Lucien
  • Ozone - Craig
  • Luny - Anthony
  • Devar - Ben
  • Sengster - me

Devar took a lot of photos; Scroop brought his Canon FG1 and Yashica TLR Medium Format which most of us drooled over; there was a lot of talk about lenses, Flickr, equipment; thanks to Scroop, Ozone and Urbanphotographer for getting the rounds; I realised how many serious photographers there are in Perth; I tried out Devar's 580EX speedlight on my EOS350D; Scroop, Ozone, Devar and I segued to D'Tandoor on Oxford Street for dinner.

Great catching up with all of you - we'll have to do it again soon!

Ozone (Craig), 1/2 of Luny (Anthony) and Noodlez (Michael), taken with Devar's 580EX flash, I think.

Nice glamour-shot portrait of Noodlez.

Scroop (Lucien) being serious.

Devar (Ben) with Scroop's Yashica TLR - the next camera that I'm going to get.

Ozone, who wins the "Loudest Shirt Award" for his super-saturated Mambo shirt.

Street portraiture

One of my Flickr contacts, Craig Biertempfel aka 'Btezra', constantly amazes me with his street portraits. Craig has the ability to connect with people, and in the course of his interactions with them, obtains powerful and touching portraits. Craig's interest isn't in the act of taking the photograph or the photograph itself, but in the connection he can make with the person looking at the camera lens. The photograph is a by-product of this connection and by far and large, they are excellent. Craig's Flickrstream is highly recommended.

Craig's street portraits inspired me to try my hand at obtaining consensual portraits of strangers. Unlike Craig, I'm still too photography-focused; for me, the obtaining of a consensual portrait of a stranger is still the focus of my interactions with them. Gradually, I'm trying to teach myself to value the interaction, and to see the photograph that emerges from that interaction as a product of the moment's connection between two strangers. I've had a fair few successes, where the portrait taken shows this momentary connection, when the person photographed isn't just interacting with the objective camera but with the photographer looking at him/her through the lens. Here are three such portraits of which I am proudest.

Street portraits can be hard work but, as I'm starting to discover, only if the purpose of your interaction with the person is the photograph. At the end of the day, I've found that the more satisfying portraits become reminders of the interaction I've had with the person - the morsels of insight into the person's life, into his or her past.

Flickr-itis

I've already mentioned Flickr a fair few times in previous entries. For me, Flickr is proving to be a useful resource and an addictive forum through which I can showcase my work, receive comments and connect with other photographers in the wide, wide world.

What is Flickr?
Technically, Flickr (www.flickr.com) is a web application that lets you upload, store, display and manage your photos in a personal online gallery which you can share with friends, families, strangers and contacts. More importantly, Flickr is the space within which an online community has formed, to share photographs and images, to create interest groups (including online forums), and similar fun stuff. In Flickr, your photographs are displayed within a continuous photostream; you can then create sets (or albums) by nominating specific photographs for inclusion in specific sets; you can also submit photographs to public groups, which are special-interest forums for showcasing and discussing pictures related to specific topics, activities or themes.

Flickr is free, but you can sign up for a 'Pro' account, which provides you with unlimited uploads, unlimited photos and unlimited sets. A 'Pro' account retails for about $24.95USD (about $25AUD) per year. If you've got the $$$ and you think an online studio/workshop/forum/space for your photography is the way to go, then it's a recommended investment.

Flickr is also sickeningly addictive. Once your photographs are in your 'stream, you have a couple of sets up and running, and have joined a few groups and formed a number of contacts, people begin visiting your 'stream, viewing your photographs, leaving comments and nominating your photographs as 'favourites'. It's another avenue to connect with others on the web.

To get started, have a look a few of these recommended streams:

SLS action at Scarborough Beach

On the weekend just past, I "covered" the 2nd day of the SGIO Senior State SLS championships at Scarborough Beach for North Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club (www.ncslsc.com). A perfect day with terrific swells that made for many dramatic shots of surf boats and surf skis struggling against the surf - such as these North Cott boaties who were tipped over!

Swamped

Cott Jesters

This photo of the Cott Jesters boat crew was taken on Friday afternoon at Cottesloe Beach. I had dropped in after work to photograph the Sculptures by the Sea, and happened upon these group getting ready to train for the weekend's SGIO Senior State SLS Championships at Scarborough Beach. I took a fair few shots of the crew getting out and coming back from their practise run, but this is by far my favourite, if only because of the lighting, clarity and very subtle 'posing' of Michael 'Corky' McCorquodale, the rower in the foreground.

Best viewed large.

[Photo opp] Sculptures by the Sea @ Cottesloe Beach

The Sculptures by the Sea installations at Cottesloe have been a favourite of Perth Flickr photographers. The exhibits will be on the beach (and lawns) at Cottesloe until Sunday 19th March - so head down there and have a look if you haven't already.

  • announcements for photography events in WA photography opportunities for enthusiasts
  • reviews of photography resources and equipment
  • discussions of issues pertaining to photography in WA
  • the thoughts of a hobbyist photographer living and 'shooting in WA.
So, welcome to Light Box WA. I hope you findthe articles and entries here informative, and get involved in the discussions here.
